A Pair of Hashi, Made by You

Hashi are more than just something we use to eat.

In Japan, chopsticks have been part of
everyday life for centuries.
They are held at the dining table, shared around family meals,
given as gifts, and often connected with important moments in life.
But what makes a pair of chopsticks
truly special?

The story behind them.

At Way of Hashi, we invite you to discover the culture behind Japanese chopsticks — and then create a pair of your own.
Not something mass-produced.
Not just a souvenir picked up in a shop.
Something you made with your own hands, in Kyoto, to take home with you.

Why Hashi?

A Small Object with a Long History

Hand Crafting Own Chopsticks in Kyoto at WOH

Chopsticks have a surprisingly long history in Japan.
Although their origins can be traced back to ancient times in East Asia, chopsticks gradually became part of Japanese daily life and developed in their own unique way.
Over the centuries, Japanese people began using chopsticks not only as practical utensils, but also as objects connected to food, family, hospitality, ceremony and seasonal traditions.
Japan even developed its own distinctive chopstick culture.
Different meals can call for different shapes and materials.
There are chopsticks for everyday meals, special occasions, children, gifts and celebrations.
And because chopsticks are used every day, they become something surprisingly personal.
You hold them. You eat with them. They become part of your daily life.

Did You Know?

Japanese chopsticks are often personal.

Unlike many cultures where eating utensils are shared, in Japan it is common for each person in a household to have their own pair of chopsticks.
A family might have matching sets, but each person's pair can have a different colour, shape or design.
This simple everyday object can quietly represent something very personal:
“These are mine.”
That is one of the reasons we believe chopsticks make such a meaningful souvenir.

Make Your Own Hashi

From a Piece of Wood to Something That Belongs to You

During the experience, you don't simply choose a finished pair of chopsticks from a shelf.
You take part in creating them.

You learn about Japanese chopsticks, discover the materials and techniques behind them, and work with your own hands to create a pair that reflects your personal style.

You might make them for yourself.
Or for someone you love.
A parent. A child. A partner. A friend.

And that is part of the fun.

Why We Created
Way of Hashi ?

We believe the best way to understand a culture is not always by looking at it.

WOH Logo

Sometimes, you have to make something.
When you make something with your own hands, you slow down.

You notice the material.
You think about the details.
You make choices.

And you leave with something that carries a little piece of that experience.
That's what we wanted Way of Hashi to be.

A small introduction to Japanese culture, through something you can hold in your hands every day.

Take Home More Than
a Pair of Chopsticks

Your finished chopsticks are yours to take home. But we hope you take something else with you, too.

A little more curiosity about Japan.
A deeper appreciation for everyday objects.
And a memory of your time in Kyoto.

Because years from now, when you sit down for dinner and pick up your chopsticks, you may remember the day you made them.
